Funding for the operation of the Palmetto House
comes from donations and grants, but also from
various fund-raising events during the year. We
explore every opportunity to raise money –
through events throughout the year – or by grant
applications. Special thanks must be given to the
Dorchester County Council for their generous and
unfailing support of the Palmetto House. This is
so important when we apply for grants.
The opportunity was offered for businesses or
individuals to “Adopt a Room.” Each room
adopted will have the adopting business or
individual’s name on the room door and the
cost to adopt was $3,500. All of our bedrooms
have been adopted!
One fund-raising event is the annual Fashion Show presented by Belk of Summerville. Fashions for adults and children are featured, and the models are well known local people. Examples from past events have featured State Representative Annette Young; Ann Bailey, wife of State Representative George Bailey; local artist Fran Josephson; former County Administrator Colin Martin; and several local business owners.
If you like to pack in the pancakes, you won’t want to miss the annual Pancake Breakfast at Applebee’s on North Main Street, June 17. Applebee’s provides the site, cooks and delicious pancakes, ham, coffee, tea and juice – all in support to the Palmetto House. Last year, for the third year in a row, “Two Girls and A Guy” from 95SX-FM radio were there to lend support.
Another popular fund-raiser is the annual Poker
Run in November, sponsored by Nighmare Custom Cycles on Highway 78 and Jedburg Crossroad. Registration for this event was $10 rider/$5 passenger OR $10 and $5 of non-perishable food. The day consisted of music by a live band, door prizes and a 50/50 drawing. All the proceeds went to the Palmetto House. Please look for it again this November.
In November of each year, the Palmetto House
has an annual Gala. In 2004 & 2005 it was held
at Oscar’s of Summerville. The theme was “A
Taste of America” and showcased cuisines of the
Carolina’s, Miami, New Orleans, Texas, Chicago,
California and the Pacific Rim – plus including
Dessert and beverage stations. Oscar’s owner
Mark Deitch donated the food, manpower and
site for the event.
